Healthy Teeth: Do's And Don'ts

To help consumers in obtaining competent and economical dental care for a healthy and happy smiles "Consumer Reports" made the list of "Healthy teeth: do's and don'ts":

Do's.

Brushing and flossing - The most important concern about teeth is regular brushing and flossing. Regular cleaning by brushing and flossing 2-3 times a day not only prevents the accumulation of plaque that leads to gum disease, but also may protect the heart and arteries. Bacteria contained in dental plaque, can enter through the gums into the bloodstream and seriously injure the circulatory system and also lead to infections of the oral cavity, which in turn can spread to the jaw and the rest of the skull. In addition, patients with diabetes have an increased risk to earn the aggravation, because they are also more prone to diseases of the teeth and gums.

Go on a visit to the dentist – checked by a dentist to a possible accumulation of plaque and stone and make it clean on a professional cleaning, as well as to make sure that your gums are healthy; however, professional cleaning twice a year doesn't mean that you can not keep a constant oral hygiene. The study does not support the view that multiple visits to the dentist per year can replace regular brushing and flossing.

Chew sugar-free gum – if you have a habit of regularly or not to chew gum, choose sugar-free gum with xylitol which contains natural sugar alcohol that helps prevent the development of dental caries.

Don'ts

Does not justify the sensitivity of the teeth. The best strategy to combat sensitivity of teeth is thorough brushing and flossing, then a visit to the dentist will become less frequent, and the number of procedures will be reduced. The biggest problem arising from sensitivity of teeth is that it makes people avoid visiting the dentist for a regular cleaning or treatment of mild pain, until the problem escalates into a condition that requires a serious dental/medical intervention.

Do not eat frequent meals , frequent snacks (especially sweet foods and drinks) the food is not only harmful, but also harmful bacteria that cause tooth decay. Teeth are advised to brush after each meal but if you eat snacks, the constant cleaning of teeth is not only difficult but can also lead to excessive cleansing and abrasion of the enamel.

Don't be afraid of pain – most fears of pain in the dentist's office are unfounded. According to "Consumer Reports," most patients reported pain  after the treatments when the tooth was removed. However, most of them do not realize that most pain associated with nerve sensitivity before the treatment, when the patient decides that he is going to the dentist! The treatment is in fact usually is painless, because the procedure is performed under local anesthesia.
